An Afternoon At MacRostie Winery

Some of my favorite adventures in my wheelchair are day trips. They aren’t too long so I don’t get too tired and my back doesn’t start to hurt! This time around my parents and I went to visit my cousin in Healdsburg and my aunt joined us as well. We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge to Sonoma County and had a very fun afternoon at the winery.

We met in the town square which was perfect for wheeling around in. The pathways were all cement so it was easy to navigate and get around. We decided to get a small bite to eat at Oakville Grocery where they had a nice variety of salads and sandwiches. After a caprese salad and a bag of chips, we were off to MacRostie Winery where they met us straight from our cars with a glass of their rose for each of us. It was the perfect welcome for a 95 degree day.

The Healdsburg area feels as though it is a step above other wineries. The landscape is beautiful, especially the location of the MacRostie Estate House which is a contemporary tasting room overlooking the vineyard. I decided to stick with just white wines because it was so hot out. We also had a charcuterie box that went well with the wine. There was a mixture of all sorts of things that set off different notes of the wines. The list of the contents of the box included salami, beet hummus, crispy crackers, radishes, cheese, to a small salad. The Estate House is all flat and completely wheelchair accessible.

The wines were very tasty! I love a bright, slightly tart, and not too sweet white wine. Even though I was only having white wine, I loved the variety of flavors. They all tasted different. On their website, they say “our winemaker, Heidi Bridenhagen oversees 130+ small fermentations each vintage, yielding a broad palette of flavors to work with at the blending table.” They were talking about how she’s a wine scientist at our tasting and that was very evident with all the different flavors in the wines I tried. I think I’ve been having the same brands of wine for awhile now so it was nice to try something new and I totally recommend it. It is very good!

This was such a fun and easy day trip. I can’t wait to visit again.
