Book Club: In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune – Book Review

I had very mixed feelings about this book. It had the right intentions but fell flat for me. I’ve never been a fan of sci-fi or robots and I think you really need to be to fully appreciate this book. I gave this book 3.25 stars.

Growing up, I could never take movies with robots in them seriously and I think part of that was still true for me while reading this book. I liked that this book is a retelling of Pinocchio because I had something I could compare it to, but it was hard for me to stay engaged until about halfway through.

There is a lot of dialogue and very character driven. I listened to the audiobook and listening to the robot named Rambo was very difficult because I thought the voice was annoying, but I give the narrator, Daniel Henning credit because all the voices were very different and perfect for the characters.

Depending on how you view sci-fi, this story is very hit or miss. I liked the writing and getting to know the characters across the whole story does start to grow on you. Even though there is a lot of dialogue, the characters help move the story along, but parts did seem to drag a bit.

I thought the romantic relationship between Victor and Hap wasn’t very clear. I think the author could’ve made it more clear that they liked each other because I thought it was hard to fully see their chemistry. Overall, this was a fun adventure, but I did have trouble with a world of robots, but then again, that’s just me! If you love sci-fi and appreciate robots then you’ll like this retelling of Pinocchio.
