This was a fun read! My friend told me about it and it reminded us both about our childhood summers. I’d rate it 3.75 out of 5 stars.
It is a romantic novel about Percy, a 30-year-old woman, who comes back to her childhood lake town for a funeral and reconnects with her first love, Sam, after they haven’t seen each other in eight years.
The narrative shifts between six important summers in Barry’s Bay and a single weekend in the present, highlighting deep friendships, love, a regrettable mistake, and the power of forgiveness.
I think it’s a good spring or summer read or listen if you enjoy audiobooks. I can see how this book could remind people of The Summer I Turned Pretty.
It does have two brothers, a summer house, and the boy’s mom does end up getting cancer, but I think this book is different enough that you wouldn’t necessarily compare them. My friend didn’t even think about that until I brought it up.
The scenery and feelings it evokes is totally early 2000s summer teen vibes. Those are the memories I love the most. AIM messages and cell phones without internet. What a time to be alive!
I would totally recommend this book. It’s a summer feel good story.
The TV eight episode adaptation will air June 10, 2026 on Prime Video and will be titled Every Year After.
The series stars Sadie Soverall as Percy and Matt Cornett as Sam.
